My awesome blend Larisa, from 0to26point2.com mentioned an opportunity to me: to try an energy gel made from Chia seeds that was ALL-natural that’d just been created by a new company called Huma.
Whoa. Chia seeds IN my energy gels??
Most people know that my fuel of choice on runs has been Clif Shot Bloks and Gels since they’ve worked out best for me being organic since I have a sensitive tum-tum.
Two of my favorite products in one? I was okay to give it a shot! I figured why not jumpstart the week by talking about a natural ENERGY source!
The story behind Huma is an intriguing one too!
Where did Hüma come from?
The idea for Hüma was born in the sands of Iraq. In the summer of 2009 a US Army soldier named 1st Lieutenant McCollum was charged with leading grueling missions throughout Iraq. At the time he was reading a book about the Tarahumara, a tribe of Mexican Indians who regularly compete in epic 100+ mile races as part of their culture. To fuel themselves on these ultramarathons, they use a special chia seed blend. He figured if it worked for them in Mexico, maybe it would work for him in Iraq.
It did. In fact, the stuff was amazing at keeping him going, and that discovery eventually led to the creation of Hüma. Today, Hüma brings together Tarahumara tradition, sports nutrition research, healthy ingredients and great taste as our best shot at helping you enjoy your gel.
The owners of Huma sent me two flavors to try: Apple Cinnamon & Strawberry.

I decided to give them a shot on my long run planned for Saturdays coming up after I’d gotten them!
* Huma sent me complimentary samples of their energy gels to try, but opinions on the product and the review are all my own.
I tried the gels out on my long runs leading up to the Princess half & the race itself –
Verdict: I dig em!
They have the consistency of a smooth apple butter and kept me energized and moving without any negative impact to my tummy or overall performance! Winner, winner! They were not super sweet and tasted like real fruit, not fruit-flavored.
What are the Benefits of Huma?

Want to try some for yourself?? I’m giving away 4 prize packs for my readers to try!
What do you look for in your fitness energy gels/sources?
Have you tried the magic of chia energy?
Im about 78.4% chia seeds these days too.
LOVELOVELOVE me my googelandPUDDING.
Chia is the only way I get through the day without sleeping in my car!
My mom gave me two of these in my stocking for Christmas. She found them at a running store in Chattanooga and thought I’d like to try them. She got me the strawberry ones but I haven’t tried them. Now that I’m seeing more people talking about them it intrigues me. I’m still scared to try something new. I usually use GU or Shot Bloks on my runs, though lately I’ve been so bad about fueling. I need to make it a habit again.
I tried them first on a short run and near home…yay bathroom lol…but they’re super gentle on my stomach when I usually hate all gels period
I am obsessed with Chia right now! SO COOL! I gotta look for these…but I have a feeling they are US only! DAMN you Americans and your wicked products! Dont forget about your Canadian Runners HUMA!! We need Chia too!
I know! We need love for you guys!
Never heard of them!
I so want to find these locally to try them.
Good luck if you entered!
sounds interesting! I haven’t tried these yet!
I stay hydrated. lots of water!
I LOVE Huma gel!!!! My favorite!!!
Mmmm, apple cinnamon sounds delicious! I stick to GU for triathlons and long runs, but those Huma ones look good too.
GU doesn’t like me, I don’t know why!
Sounds interesting. I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to have them shipped to a DPO addresss though.
Unfortunately all giveaways are within the Continental US
You know I’m always on the lookout for a tummy friendly fuel! I haven’t tried them yet 🙂 Lately, I’ve been on a HoneyStinger chew kick and I have a Vanilla Gu waiting to be tested.
I would be really into trying these. I’m looking for a stomach friendly, gluten-free option for fuel on my upcoming 1/2 marathons. This seems like it could work!
I occasionally use chia seeds in water, smoothies or scrambled eggs for energy. I have not tried them in a gel format.
Wow, never heard of these before! It sounds so interesting and I am definitely thinking about trying them out! BTW, apple cinnamon and strawberry flavors sound great! Good to hear that they aren’t too sweet and actually taste like real fruit! Thanks for the good read!
They’re so yum! Thanks for stopping by!
Of course!
I use Sharkies because I have a very sensitive stomach. They work great.
I usually liked those or Clif organic products
I carb load, especially prior to long runs.
I never tried this specific version, but I use chia seeds in a lot of my nutrition. I have even made my own Chia Gel, that worked out pretty good. I would love to try Huma though. Thanks for the review Kat!
These are totally for you then Brad! Thanks!
Haven’t tried these, but found the fruit flavors of Gu are my enemy. I can totally do the mocha, but the Island Nectar Roctane immediately kicks in the gag reflex. Honey Stinger waffles are like candy and work for me – at least what doesn’t crumble as I open! Have heard great things about Huma, but haven’t tried it. Love me some chia!
I love em!
I think I might be the last person on earth to try chia seeds. 🙁
Girl lets get you on the gravy train!
I used to use the Shot Bloks. I just can’t handle the taste. I gag every time. I’ve also tried the GU gels. I liked the energy but they messed with my stomach. I’m going to look into these humas. I eat chia seeds every day anyway so I think I would really like them.
Gu doesn’t work for me either!
Need to try this! Looks like a good option! Gu has always been my fuel source for runs, but the texture is not that great!
Yea it’s tough with trial and error!
COOL! I totally want to try some out!! Hopefully these ones don’t hurt my belly!
I can’t believe I haven’t heard of these gels before!!
They’re brand new!
These sound great, it’s good to know that they work well with sensitive stomachs I know I have issues with things sitting well with my tummy especially while working out. I have been bad about fueling and need to get back in the habit, I’ll have to pick some of these up!
I don’t run very long distances and haven’t trained for a marathon or half marathon, so I’ve never tried any of these kinds of “gels”. but I have heard of the energy benefits of chia seeds and I love the story behind this product!
Chia is not my thing 🙁
SOunds neat–w oudl love to try
Sound interesting. I love chia…
These sound great! I’d love to give them a try!
I love Honey stinger, and also love chia seeds… I’d love to try these!
I have used SHOT BLOLS and GU in the past – would love to try this chia gel.
I use Honey Stinger but I love Chia seeds…use them in my smoothies and protein shakes. Would love to try these if I can remember to order them…no one locally carries them.
Good luck if you’ve entered 🙂
I totally fell in love with Huma (and coincidentally, my review goes up Wednesday). Wonder if it’s considered double dipping to enter your giveaway…. 😉 I think I’ll chance it, I seriously love these.
Haha schneaky! I will do the same on your post, deal? 😉
I’m still look for the perfect energy fuel for my workouts. Would love to try Huma!
I use Pineapple GU Roctane…I’m intrigued by this one though!
Gu dos not like my tummy, probably because caffeine is sticky with me
I love Peanut Butter Gu, but also love Chia seeds so this gel may be worth a try!
I want to try! 🙂
I’d never heard of them but I’ve been meaning to do some research on fueling during long runs. My longest run hasn’t gone past 7 miles at which point water is still fine. But I’ve noticed that I get hungry soon after if I don’t go straight home for food or a protein shake. Thanks for the neat giveaway. I obviously need to start doing this research.
how have I never heard of these!! I love chia seeds and these are a great for runs!

I look for things that don’t upset my stomach, and everything I’m reading about Huma says it doesn’t. I can’t wait to try it! Chia seeds are already a part of my diet in oatmeal and on salads, so it seems like the right progression to try it in an energy gel.
It’s going to be finish of mine day, but before ending I am reading this
impressive article to improve my know-how.
