We DID it! The Spartan Special Ops Sprint Race Recap

I mentioned I was running another mud run with a client aka fun friend of mine who has a goal to one day run a Tough Mudder and made the Spartan Special Ops Sprint her starting point goal HERE – buddy accountability works wonders!

I met up with Kel at Raymond James Stadium about an hour before our 830am wave was to start so we could gear up for RACE DAY! This was not only her first Mud Run/Obstacle Race, BUT also her first RACE period!

Nice Warning: You may DIE??

18 Obstacles – pretty daunting!

We listened to the National Anthem and Major speak before seeing the Elite men and women start before our wave! I didn’t take my camera or phone on the course with us, of course, but can recap most of the race with some points of interest:
Stadium: We went ALL of this thing! Stairs up and stairs down. At a couple of points we had to put on a resistance band, strap it around our ankles, and go UP and DOWN stairs! Tough for two lil things!
Obstacles: Heavy bag lifting, rope pulling, spear trowing, wall climbing and LOTS of burpees! In the beginning we took 15 burpees and stairs over a 6 floor run and then at other points you had the option to try to hit a target with a football and then a spear and if you missed there was 30 burpees waiting for you. When we couldn’t do the rope climb there was another set – so 105 total. BOOM.
Crawling: I’m all about the low crawl – I’ll keep my head sideways and low to watch out for the barbed wire above. However, this cookie was a tough one! We low crawled ALL the way from one diagonal corner of Raymond James to the other – approximately 112 yards! Kel kept popping her head up and we were like “where is the end?” more than a few times. She caught a good snag on her arm – battle wound – and we saw some bald guys with scratches on their poor  heads – brutal!
Strength: Strength was tested throughout the course with lots of rope lifting of weights and having tired legs go up and down stairs. We also did farmer walks and had to climb mud mountains – mountains to small peeps.
Total Miles: 4
I couldn’t have been more proud to grab Kel’s hand and jump over the fire finish before battling the gauntlet and finishing together! She was ECSTATIC and rightfully so! There’s nothing quite like setting out to accomplish a goal and that day finally coming to fruition!

We made sure to leave our mark and sign the wall of SPARTAN FINISHERS Post-Race!

I didn’t expect DOUBLE bling for the Special Ops [Inaugural] Race + the first piece of the Spartan Trifecta – Finishers of the Spartan Sprint, Super Spartan, and Spartan Beast. I’m not all that certain that I’ll be in that mix of Obstacle course runners, but it’s awesome getting a piece of the pie nonetheless!
Here’s some sentiments from Kel herself!
“As I set out on my get healthy journey, I began to set goals for myself. My long term goal is to complete a Tough Mudder event. So in order to help prepare, I registered for the Special Ops Spartan Race. Somehow I convinced my trainer Kat to participate as well. First, I must give a huge thank you to my amazing trainer Katrina! There is no way I could have completed it without her cheering me on the entire way and tackling the obstacles right along with me. After finishing the race, I felt such a sense of accomplishment and pride. It was one of the toughest things I’ve ever done physically, but I survived. I am already looking forward to my next race leading up to the Tough Mudder in November. Until then, I am a SPARTAN!!” – Kelly

Gotta love post-race gag gifts 😉

Awesome, awesome, awesome! Kel is such a rockstar for doing a mudrun as her first race. That’s seriously impressive. And you’re such a supportive friend/trainer to do it with her!

I have yet to do one of these obstacle races. Every time I read about them, they seem so fun. I just don’t know that I train enough to have the upper body strength to complete the obstacles. Congrats to both of you!

I kind of hated my Spartan Race experience, but I’m glad you guys had a good time! I like the numbered buffs they gave you, that’s a big improvement on writing on people’s faces! I’d rather do inclined running than burpees, but I did have to opt for burpees on the rope climb too.

Great job! Personally I like the normal races, lol, like with a road or perhaps if I am daring a trail.
