Training Tip of the Week: Why I do at-home workouts

Let me tell you a little diddy about HOW I started my fitness journey and what got me OFF OF THE COUCH and into working out more!

 

I can think back to when I first started to realize I needed to get moving and workout – I was SCARED more than anything. My apprehensions? How could I go to a gym where everyone would be watching me? I didn’t know what to do? I didn’t know what to wear….Did I even own any shorts? I didn’t want to be in a situation where I set myself up for failure…

 

I started to walk with Jaeden around our neighborhood. Even if it was 15 minutes at first and then 30 minutes, I was doing a heck of a lot more than sitting and doing nothing. Then it happened – I hit my first plateau .. walking seemed “easy.” So, I went to the store and bought a few workout DVDs. At-home workouts got me up and moving and took the thinking out of working out for me. Even if I didn’t finish the entire workout, I still got up and got a little sweaty. My favorite workout was a cardio yoga workout from Crunch Fitness (circa 2003) but after a month of it almost daily I grew tired of it. I also started to realize that after a few months I wasn’t sweating as much or feeling as much of a challenge – plateau #2? I began to run outside… and up until this point I hadn’t joined an actual gym.

 

I joined the gym at my office a few months later, and made lots of new friends. I was able to meet friends for a jog on lunch break and invite them over to do my DVDs with me, but I didn’t like to try to figure out the machines or the weights – I could lift them but I had no rhyme or reason to what I was doing.. I also started to work longer hours and had limited time to take my lunch break AT the gym or go before or after work…

 

In 2010 I was watching TV and saw the infomercial for INSANITY. I said to myself, “this looks like a challenging workout…there’s 60 days worth of programming….there’s no thinking on my part…and if I pass out it looks like these people are doing just about the same thing themselves.” INSANITY began my love of at-home Beachbody workouts because the programming helped you begin at one phase of training and progress over the course of a month or two. I broke my final plateau and haven’t looked back since…

 

I eluded to the rise of online workouts HERE because many people are realizing that they can do effective workouts without having to leave the comfort of their own home – much like I did myself. I don’t always workout AT HOME, but that is where I am still most comfortable. I can throw on whatever clothes I want and go into our living room or fitness room and knock out an awesome workout without having to drive anywhere or do anything other than WORK. I’ve also┬álearned that I like to change my scenery every once in a while. Some days I’ll do Beachbody at-home workouts on our back porch or even at the playground with pull-ups in between or while I’m traveling I’ll do what I can do in a hotel room or wherever I’m staying. I HAVE NO EXCUSES to get [even shorter] workouts in no matter where I am!

I’m not knocking the gym – it’s just not my workout location of choice. As a personal trainer, I NOW KNOW what the heck I’m doing when it comes to weights and variations with workouts but 80% of the people who join a gym don’t … and I can sympathize with them. It’s overwhelming at times – which is why I enjoy being a part of others’ day as a group fitness instructor.

 

I DON’T WANT TO THINK – I JUST WANT TO WORK…

 

Even now, I enjoy Beachbody LIVE group fitness formats for my OWN workouts because the music drives your workout and you can just focus on form and technique.

    I go through a love/hate relationship with the actual gym. But I do love getting outside and doing DVDs at home. Once I get back into the swing of it that way, then the physical gym isn’t so bad again ­čÖé

    I prefer working out at home too! It’s just easier and more comfortable.

    I like at home workouts too, but every so often I CRAVE a Body Pump class so off I go to the gym.

    I love at home workouts! So much easier to fit around a full time job, rather than going to the gym. I love how much more comfortable it is too!
