Low Blood Sugars are always on my mind. As a #Type1Wife and family member to diabetics in my household, it’s important for me to not go completely Sugar-Free. Yes, I know I am supposed to pump the brakes on the donut fixation I had during pregnancy and not shove delectable candies down anyone’s throat. It’s important for me to know how to rescue anyone from a low blood sugar under my roof or in my proximity using options that won’t completely derail the focus on HEALTHY. We want to remember that just because a household includes ‘diabetic’ as a focus for nutrition and medical needs, doesn’t necessarily mean that ALL sugar is bad. Type 1 diabetics, in particular, can experience low blood sugars for a multitude of reasons and it’s important to have options on board to avoid a dangerous low.
The general rule of thumb in a situation where a low blood sugar is being dealt with is to remember the rule of 15 (after checking blood sugars and seeing that they are under 70 mg/dl:)
✓ consume 15 grams of carbohydrate
✓ wait 15 minutes, then recheck your blood glucose level
✓ if needed, take in 15 more grams of carbs
Running straight to processed sugars can have lasting effects on one’s health, so we try to only see processed sugar correction as an emergency option [no other choice!]
Staples that we typically keep in the house for these occasions include natural sugars such as: dried fruit, honey, orange juice, and fresh fruit.
