Focusing on Goals: The Compound Effect

I used to be a BIG time reader. I used to love reading books so much when I was a kid I’d go to the library almost every other day just to swap out books I’d sped through. I semi-speed read and would get lost in stories and words to the point where I felt like a SPONGE learning so much!
******
Over the past few years I’d seemed to abandon that. I would read online or look at magazine but never take time to READ-READ. Much less read for my own PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT. This year, that changed. I knew if I wanted to focus on my GOALS for the year, that I needed to take positive steps to GET there – it wasn’t happening by magic!
******
My mission has been to read (online or an actual book) something related to my growth and development. Whether it be about financial tips or new fitness methods or goal-setting itself – It’s HAPPENING! My co-coach, Lisa, was nice enough to lend me a book that roped me right back in!

In a nut-shell this book is about taking positive steps to write down your goals, track your progress, and look at what’s making you accountable for achieving your goals – and STAYING accountable. It talks about the Compound Effect and how many small strides toward a goal can help keep that in place versus expecting large rewards all at once in the beginning without any hard work.
******
*****
A  great example of the Compound Effect is when you compare someone being given $3,000,000.00 now versus somsone else being asked to put aside a penny a day, and with each day doubling the pennies that are in the pot. Most of us are ALL about instant gratification versus being patient and waiting for small efforts to gain bigger rewards. The person who saves a penny a day and doubles the pennies daily over time would make over $10 Million down the road if they just focus on the investment instead of the money right away.
*****
For me, this book hit home in regards to me WRITING THINGS DOWN and TRACKING my progress – my detractors – my positive influences. I’ve started to carry a small notebook to write in daily and note what steps I’ve taken that day to focus on my goals and what steps [maybe] that I took backwards. I know writing this blog definitely is my way of gaining public accountability which only helps ten fold!

Also, going through the process of evaluating what Bad Habits are impacting your Game!
*****
1) Identify your triggers for bad behavior
2) Clean house – get rid of anything or anyone that’s preventing good habits
3) Swap it for a positive behavior or habit
4) Ease into your new routine of focus on the goal
5) Or Jump in, many of us can be all in or need time to ease in
******
What about you?
******
Have you taken time to reassess your goals and focus on your own development and growth?
I’d highly recommend this book for anyone who needs that reminder!

This link also highlights resources like the Gratitude assessment (checking to see which areas in life you should show more gratitude with) and online snippets of the book. I read this book on my own and was not compensated to do a review, etc.

Like you, I used to be a HUGE reader and I wish I had more time for it now. This sounds like a great read to get you thinking and planning. I’ve done a lot of mapping out goals for my next few years in terms of balancing my business, family, new baby coming, etc. It really helps me feel like I have some control and know where I’m headed!

This is what I’m in the process of doing now… evaluating my actual goals. I need to pick one or two I’m actually passionate about instead of half-assing so many things.

Gotta look into this book. I can confidently say though so I actively record my goals and my actions to acheiving them, because if some things I am doing do not work, what’s the point on wasting time doing them!!
