Before I headed home to work as a fitness coach (mixed in with being a Beachbody Ambassador and Group Fitness instructor) I knew the biggest challenge for me would be my schedule! I have always been one to use my planner, calendar, phone, to stay on task with meetings and the like. So, how was I supposed to do this working from HOME?
I had to remember to focus on SCHEDULING FOR SUCCESS not only with “Work” tasks but for everything so that I kept a balance in life!
I had to first think of my priorities (learning to title these from The Daniel Plan) so I could be sure to separate out what was most important for me to balance each week – I would associate a color to each as well.
✓ Faith + Focused time for Me – ORANGE
✓ Fitness + Food – TEAL
✓ Friends/Family – PINK
✓ Focused Time for Me – PURPLE
✓ Work responsibilities – BLUE
Next, I had to begin to use a calendar – I use Google Calendar – to plug in things that were already set and then add in my additional slots.
For example, I add in my teaching schedule, I add in meetings and planned events, and then work around those things to set up time for me to workout – time for me to read – time for me to make additional time for those people and moments that matter the most to me.
There should be a balance with everything so that we’re not “just” working or “just” making time for everyone else BUT ourselves – this also helps us to be sure we’re staying true to our commitments, not forgetting key appointments, and stop expecting our brains to hold everything only to become frustrated when we forget.
Here’s an example of a sample calendar I found – can you tell me what you think about it?
Here are some areas I noticed:
There’s lots of blocked out family time which is a good thing, but maybe that can be narrowed down to leave room for ‘unknowns’…. where is the time for fitness and food and personal “ME” time?
This habit is NOT fool proof – I have days where things cancel, I run into another meeting or lengthen a walk I’m on because I’m enjoying the outdoors – no one’s perfect 😉
The goal is to start somewhere – to MAKE TIME FOR US so that we know that we should never feel guilty for taking that time for ourselves – it makes us better for everyone else! It also creates balance and helps us to see where are we spending most of our time and how can we adjust?
Do you currently use a calendar for scheduling?
What lessons do you feel you’d learn if you took a peek at your “bucket colors of time?”
